Start island hopping

My island hopping adventure began on the 11th day of my cycling trip. First I went to the island of Als, from where I took the car ferry to the small, manageable island of Ærø in the eastern part. A true postcard idyll awaited me there: rolling hills, beautiful stretches of coast and flowering fields - a paradise for cyclists. The path meandered picturesquely through the landscape until I reached the charming town of Ærøskøbing.

Ærøskøbing is a small, charming town with narrow streets, crooked half-timbered houses and numerous photo opportunities that will make even the most unmotivated amateur photographer reach for the shutter button. It is also one of the oldest and best-preserved towns in Denmark.

After my stay, I continued my journey by ferry and reached the port city of Svendborg on the island of Funen. Another chapter of my adventure - the island hopping continued!

Not quite tight

I continued on in perfect weather and with a tailwind. I cycled over bridges from island to island: Tåsinge, Langeland and finally by ferry to the island of Lolland - my sixth island in two days. The ferry crossings were a welcome change: relaxed breaks, letting my legs dangle and enjoying the Baltic Sea. But then, after 15 kilometers on Lolland, the inevitable happened: a hole in the tire. My frame was covered in sealant everywhere. I had sworn by my tubeless system - it had accompanied me reliably for thousands of kilometers before the trip. But this time? No luck, the much-praised sealant simply did not want to seal the hole itself. Fortunately, it was only a small hole and the pressure did not drop immediately. So I thought to myself: maybe the sealant just needed a creative break. And indeed: the next time I pumped it up, the pressure held and I was able to carry on cycling - with regular re-pumping. At the campsite I finally plugged the holes with the repair kit.

A smile as a door opener: People magnet touring bike

I have been travelling alone for 13 days now and my physical and mental state? Currently excellent! I hope it continues like this. I may not have mentioned it before, but at no point have I felt lonely. On the contrary - I have had lots of nice encounters, both short and long. With a touring bike, a positive attitude and a smile on your face, you quickly become the topic of conversation. People seem to be magically drawn to you, as if you were a walking adventure novel. This was also the case in the picturesque fishing village of Nysted: I met a Swiss holidaymaker in a small café and before we knew it, we were engrossed in conversations about God and the world. These spontaneous encounters? Absolutely priceless - they are the icing on the cake!

giant

The day started off rainy. Thanks to a tip from my attentive father, I made a detour to the gigantic oak Valdemars Egen. This tree is anything but ordinary - with a volume of 100 m³, it is the largest tree in Denmark. It also offered me protection from the rain. The impressive key data? 25 meters high, 3 meters in diameter and around 550 to 600 years old - definitely a natural prehistoric rock! I felt tiny and was deeply impressed as I stood there and marveled at this old giant. After this impressive natural experience, I continued my tour, because the island of Møn was already waiting for me with its next spectacular natural spectacle.

Møns Klint

Anyone visiting Denmark should not miss the spectacular limestone cliffs of Møns Klint. To avoid mass tourism, I used a little trick: book accommodation as close to the attraction as possible and then get up really early. No sooner said than done: at 5:30 a.m. I dragged myself out of bed and started the steep path up. As soon as I got to the top, the next "joy" was waiting for me - seemingly endless stairs leading down to the coast. But the effort was rewarded: shortly after sunrise I reached my destination. The sun bathed the cliffs in a wonderful light. And the best part? Not a soul in sight - just as planned. So I was able to enjoy the impressive natural spectacle in complete peace. A true moment of silence and beauty.

From Dog Happiness to the Capital

In my accommodation near Køge - from day 15 to day 16 - I had the pleasure of getting to know some very special roommates: the dogs of the house. As soon as I arrived, they pounced on me with such enthusiasm as if I were their long-lost best friend. I couldn't help but take an immediate liking to them both. Their story was moving: both were rescued from difficult circumstances and had been through a difficult time. But here, in their new home and with the loving care of their owner, they blossomed again. They now thank you for this second chance with an unconditional affection that really touches your heart and gives you back your faith in the small miracles of everyday life.

After a warm farewell, I set off again - along the coast towards Køge. The route stretched for 40 kilometers full of beach parks and wonderful views of the water, which made the time fly by. Finally, I reached my next big destination: the vibrant capital Copenhagen. A perfect end to a stage full of animal friends and coastal romance!

Copenhagen

After 1,360 kilometers and 16 days in the saddle, I finally reached a major milestone: Copenhagen! What a city - the mix of historical charm and modern, Scandinavian design was immediately noticeable. And the cyclists? Everywhere! Copenhagen lives up to its reputation as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world - just my thing. Ironically, I hardly needed my bike in the "hygge city" because Copenhagen is so compact that I could explore everything on foot. I strolled leisurely along the harbor of Nyhavn with its colorful, photogenic houses, visited the fascinatingly quirky, autonomous district of Christiania and of course took a break in one of the many cozy cafes - typical hygge. The vibrant life, the green parks and the relaxed atmosphere made it pretty easy to feel at home here. Definitely a highlight of my tour - and all without a single pedal stroke!

DAY 18

Sweden

Early in the morning I took the train across the impressive, almost 8-kilometer-long Öresund Bridge and reached the third country of my trip: Malmö, Sweden. Since I had already booked the ferry to Rügen for the evening, I had little time to explore the city. The weather was cloudy and a bit grim - typically Nordic - and rain was forecast for the afternoon, so I had no time to waste. Compared to the lively and sometimes hectic atmosphere of Copenhagen, Malmö seemed pleasantly quiet and relaxed, without the large crowds of tourists. Perfect for a little breather. On my bike ride through the Swedish countryside, I was all alone - the "lone knight" on two wheels, with no other road users crossing my path. So I reached the port city of Trelleborg in time before the rain made its threat come true. In the evening I boarded a large catamaran and had myself taken across the Baltic Sea to Sassnitz on Rügen. The next stage was already waiting!
